AI101: Engaging Students Using AI-Powered Instruction

Modernizing Professional Learning Experiences

The AI101 course is designed to help K-12 educators explore the foundations of artificial intelligence and the ways AI can transform teaching and learning. Participants learn about AI fundamentals and large language models while gaining practical experience using generative AI in educational settings. Through hands-on activities, the course supports educators in integrating durable skills, machine learning concepts, and AI-powered instructional design into classroom practice.

High Quality Instructional STEM Resources

Participants will receive standards-aligned curriculum examples and classroom-ready STEM resources designed to promote critical thinking and AI literacy. Educators will co-design with AI their own instructional resources using AI-driven prompt engineering and Microsoft PowerPoint as an instructional design and productivity tool.

Goals

The course is research based and designed to help educators modernize classroom instruction by using AI responsibly, integrating STEM and durable skills, and preparing students for future workforce demands.

Educators will be able to:

1. Learn about AI fundamentals and large language models to utilize generative AI in educational settings

2. Integrate durable skills and machine learning through hands-on activities

3. Use AI-driven prompt engineering and Microsoft PowerPoint as an instructional design tool for creating STEM resources

4. Co-design with AI to create standards-aligned curriculum that promotes critical thinking

5. Evaluate AI responsibly and critically in educational contexts

6. Engage with FSU faculty, industry and economic experts, and participate in field experiences within local industries

7. Deepen content expertise through industry engagement

Eligibility

This course serves as a foundational course in the InSPIRE AI Pathway, helping educators build a strong base in AI, technology skills, and classroom-ready instructional design. AI101 is the initial course in the InSPIRE AI Pathway and is required for enrollment in all other InSPIRE AI Pathway courses.

Certifications and Stipend

AI101 is offered through Florida State University's InSPIRE initiative, serving northwest Florida with educational programs, professional development, and workforce enhancement.

Upon successful completion, participants receive two certifications including: a Microsoft Office Specialist in PowerPoint, an industry certification earned by successfully passing the PowerPoint certification exam; and a 35-hour professional learning certificate in AI Foundations from FSU and Microsoft, through passing post-course AI exams.

A stipend is awarded to participants who successfully complete both certifications and all program requirements.
